Malaika’s mission is to empower Congolese girls and their communities through education and health programs. The grassroots non-profit operates in the village of Kalebuka, in the Southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

An educated girl will increase her future earnings by approximately 10-20% for each additional year of schooling and will reinvest most of it back into her family and community. These are key factors in a nation’s socioeconomic development, and yet girls still face immense obstacles in obtaining an education in the DRC. At Malaika, we mobilize resources so that these girls can receive the best schooling possible, providing them with greater choices, opportunities, and the capacity to make informed decisions. Our goal is to build the leadership capacity of each individual student so that she gives back to her community, and has a positive, long-term impact on the future of the DRC. In essence, we are fueling a generation of change-agents. At the same time, we impact the surrounding community through recreational and life skills programming for adults and children, as well as essential infrastructure development.

We can all be a part of eradicating slavery on macro and micro levels. The realization that none of us is free if one person on this planet is enslaved is a hard reality for many of us to face.  Educating ourselves on the issue and global statistics and consciously buying products that do no harm and leave no slavery footprint are an amazing start for anyone wanting to join the abolitionist movement.

Beauty for Freedom was founded on the tenants of empowering through the arts, education and relationships of learning guided by survivor advocates and they look forward to evolving and growing in their advocacy and supporting more survivors globally through their programming.

UN Women focuses on strengthening the voice of women and girls while removing the structural barriers to gender equality and women’s empowerment. By investing in women and girls it allows them to be solution makers and agents for change.

Funding UN Women’s activities is one of the most effective ways to help women and girls to create a better future. This is why we joined the Metro NY chapter of the US National Committee, a 501c3 organization that solely supports the work of UN Women for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
